Al is originally from Oklahoma where his parents would never consider allowing him to ride a motorcycle. During medical school he took care of enough motorcycle accident victims to consider it an insane activity. At age 56, he got into motorcycling when he talked his son and son-in-law, who were already riders, into taking the MSF Basic Riding Course if he would. He had a rocky start in motorcycling. This was his first time to plant his butt on a motorcycle and he succeeded in flunking the riding test. He was allowed to retest a week later at which time he aced the test after getting over his fear of motorcycles. An unexpected outcome of the MSF coarse was falling in love with riding resulting a week later in buying his first bike, a new Kawasaki Vulcan 750, which he totalled six months later. By then he had just bought a used BMW 1150RT which he was able to begin riding two months later after his cast was removed. He retired from work in August, 2006, with plans to catch up on all the years he missed riding when he was younger. He likes to ride his RT solo on long trips and keeping up with his sons in the curves on his newer 1150R. He now considers himself officially insane.
