Shangra La? by Bill Kesinger
Motoring back from the Oregon coast a few days ago I chose to overnight in Winnamucca, NV. Besides I wanted to treat "her" to a Basque meal. If you haven't done that give it a try. It's family style and you are seated at a table that already has a group. Our table happened to have the town barber-who seemed to know everybody there.
During the meal the barber asked if we were in a big hurry. If not he suggested we go 20 miles north on 95, turn right at the Chevron and go 18 miles to Paradise Valley. If you counted dogs and kids there might be 100 souls. But it has a REAL western bar and grill. Old pix on the walls and cold beer--a good place for barley therapy. Continue north out of paradise to the top of Hinky summit at 7850 feet. The first few miles are paved , but the rest is gravel and steep I did it in a sport convertable but would be nothing for you dirt diggers. Just before the summit is a natural rock arch; no sign or anything. At the top a jeep trail goes both east and west even higher. The view is fantastic and the temp was pleasant. There are many signs of Indian activity and the barber said you may see an arrow head by your feet at any time. If you plan on camping take water and your other essentials as there is nothing there but space.
If any of the gang makes the trip, let us know how you liked it.
As Troy says "lean into it". Enjoy,
